Blessing of the Fleet

Each year, the Nelson marine community gathers for the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony which took place on Saturday 15 May 2021.

At the Blessing ceremony - now celebrating its 20th anniversary - vessels gather in the harbour off Rocks Road and celebrate what the fishing industry means for Nelson.

Nelson has the biggest fishing port in Australasia, and seafarers are an integral part of our community, with 26% of the population involved in the industry. This event recognises those who have been lost at sea, and the community prays for the lives of the crew that are out at sea in all weathers to provide the fresh seafood, for which New Zealand has become famous.
