MNZ Consultation - proposed Marine Protection Rules to reduce air pollution from ships
Maritime NZ is consulting on proposed Marine Protection Rule Part 199: Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships, which will implement MARPOL Annex VI, the international convention to reduce the air pollution from ships.
Annex VI of MARPOL aims to address the impact of air pollution from shipping on human health and the environments in and around port communities, as well as address the impacts of emissions from shipping activities on climate change and ozone layer depletion.
Maritime NZ’s consultation is open until 5pm on Wednesday 4 August 2021. Consultation documents can be found on their website and include:
Invitation to Comment
Appendix 1: Proposed Rules
Appendix 2: Offences and Penalties
While the proposed rules will apply to New Zealand-flagged ships and foreign-flagged ships that visit New Zealand, the Invitation to Comment does include Maritime NZ’s proposal to tailor some requirements for domestic travelling ships to suit New Zealand’s context.
Maritime NZ will be the agency responsible for monitoring and enforcing the requirements.
