Seabed mining – government announces select committee inquiry
The government has announced a select committee inquiry into seabed mining, to consider different views in New Zealand on the topic, having recently rejected governmental support for a private member’s bill to ban seabed mining. The geographic scope for the seabed mining under inquiry is New Zealand’s territorial sea, exclusive economic zone, and extended continental shelf.
Once the select committee inquiry is constituted there will likely be a public submission process to inform their findings.
