A proud Nelsonian, Troy has been based in Nelson since 2020 after nearly a decade away during which time he completed his undergraduate studies in Wellington before completing a Master’s degree from the University of Tokyo.

In the maritime field Troy has demonstrated his abilities engaging with small and medium enterprises, helping them navigate contractual complexities and disputes. He excels in crisis management and dealing with regulators, as well as health and safety and environmental matters. Being highly empathetic, Troy works well with people in accident and incident investigations and provides a reliable source of comfort to clients in need.

Additionally, with experience in local and central government, he is an expert at engaging with the public-private interface of maritime law, with applications in Navigation Safety Bylaw drafting, resource consents associated with salvage work, and fishing policy reform.

In terms of vessel sale and purchases, Troy has been involved in numerous multi-million dollar deals for private and commercial vessels and is a proven advocate in getting the best outcome for clients whether selling or buying a vessel.

His areas of interest in law are strongly rooted in the sea, with passions for environmental, policy and regulatory issues. Beyond maritime issues he has been involved in resource management reform and employment law matters.

Outside of work, Troy is a member of Whakatū Rotary Club and has been a director of both the club and the South Island Rotary district, giving him a strong community ethos. He can be frequently found on the water on a SUP, playing a round of disc golf, or distilling spirits in his garage, when he is not exploring the Nelson Tasman region with his wife.
